Rutger Hauer improvised part of his iconic “Tears in Rain” monologue in “Blade Runner” (1982):
The original script had a much longer and more technical speech for his character, Roy Batty, but Hauer felt it was too wordy and didn’t fit the emotional climax. The night before filming, he rewrote parts of it, condensing it into something more poetic.
The final lines — especially “All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.” — were largely Hauer’s creation.
Director Ridley Scott and writer David Peoples later praised Hauer’s changes, saying it made the scene unforgettable and elevated the character into something transcendent.
